TED ARNOTT, MPP REPORTSThe season of peace and joy abounds all around us. Even as I write this column, I'm listening to Handel's Messiah in our Riding Office. I love everything about Christmas time. Like many people, some of my happiest childhood memories include Christmas mornings and family get-togethers centred around the holidays. While in university in the 1980s, I couldn't wait for the end of exams and the Christmas break - maybe it was a little too much "poli sci," even for someone like me! I even proposed to my wife Lisa on a snowy, crisp and beautiful Christmas Eve in 1989, and we were married the following December 22nd - it's always a good idea to remember your wedding anniversary! Lots of great memories of special times, and with each New Year a chance to renew and begin again. No wonder we cherish this time of year. And today, Christmas is the most special time of year for our family. Lisa teaches in the public school system, and she's involved in many volunteer activities in our community. Our three boys are all busy with their school studies (or at least, they TELL us they're busy with their school studies), their music lessons, minor sports, and just hanging out with their friends. And I'm very busy too, privileged to serve the people of Wellington-Halton Hills in Ontario Legislature. These days, our lives are a hectic whirlwind, so our time together is very precious. That makes Christmas all the more important at our house. And it's the same for most families these days. But for Christians, we also remember the reason for the season, and we celebrate the birth of Christ. His life provides a light of hope and an example for the world. We are all charged to reach out, lending a hand to those in need, not only at Christmas time, but year round. There are many organizations in our communities who embrace this mission. We thank them all. We all need to dig deep to help however we can. Only by showing that generosity of spirit do we experience the real joy of Christmas. From our family to yours, Merry Christmas! And in January, let's continue to work together, building on the strengths of our communities, and make 2012 the best one yet. * * * Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott welcomes your comments. The Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce is well into planning events and opportunities for you to attend, network and grow your business. We start off with the Annual Mayor's Breakfast on Wednesday, January 25th. Awards of Excellence Nominations are OPEN and the process is easier this year - so don't delay NOMINATE yourself or some other deserving business or individual today!! The Awards gala will be held on Thursday, April 26th with a Dr. Seuss theme...'Oh the Places We Will Go!' You won't want to miss that. For those of you vintage experts or those who just enjoy a sip of wine now and then...Paul Walker is working on a Wine Tour, Sunday, April 15th. We only take one bus of 50 people and it fills up fast! (Hint - this may be a wonderful Valentine's Day gift for your special someone...and yourself!) Cost is $80 per person and includes coach bus, stops at 3 wineries (to be determined), plus dinner! What a great way to enjoy a Sunday Spring afternoon!! There is a stop at Niagara on the Lake where you can grab a bite to eat or shop at your own expense. For those of you who like to hit little white balls on green grass...Golf Day is being planned for June 13th. These Chamber events provide an opportunity to become a Sponsor and increase your profile with other local businesses. You never know who your next customer will be or where they heard about you! If you are interested in sponsoring any of our events, please contact me at the office 519-843-5140 or rscarrow@cwchamber.ca. As a valued member of the CW Chamber, if there is anything you think we can do for you or have a suggestion or want to get involved in a Committee or the Board - we would love to hear from you! Contact any Director on our Board or staff to discuss. From the Centre Wellington Board of Directors and staff we thank all of you for your support over the past years and wish you all a very prosperous, healthy and happy 2012! NEW NOMINATION PROCESS FOR AWARDS OF EXCELLENCEWe are making it easier for you to NOMINATE a worthy person, business or organization! Nominations are now OPEN and nomination forms are available online. For the majority of Nominations you only need to complete the Award Nomination Cover Page giving pertinent contact information of the Nominee and you as the Nominator. This information must be received by the Chamber no later than Friday, February 10th, 2012. THAT'S ALL! A member of the Nomination Committee will contact the individual, business or organization to fill in the rest. The Nominee must complete the remainder of the required information and have it returned to the Chamber office by 4 pm on Friday, March 2nd, 2012. While it is wonderful to be nominated by someone else, the following categories may be self-nominated, so do remember to recognize your own business if you qualify!
Award Nomination Cover Page ONLY NEEDED for these categories: The following four categories must be nominated by someone else: Citizen of the Year, Youth Citizen of the Year, Customer Service Excellence and Corporate Citizen of the Year. For these categories the Nominator will need to extol the virtues of the business, organization or individual and gather letters of support. Completed Nomination packages must be received by March 2nd, 2012 at 4 pm at the Chamber office. Remember the Adjudicating Committee base their decisions on the content in the Nomination package only – so we ask you to provide as much relevant information as required. Include photos, letters of support, other awards received, etc. This year's Awards of Excellence theme is ‘Centre Wellington – Oh the places we will go!’. For those of you who don’t recognize the quote...it is a Dr. Seuss theme – so there are endless possibilities for costumes, if you wish to participate in the theme. Business attire is totally appropriate as well. If you would you like to volunteer on this committee or assist with set up and take down on the day of the event? Please contact Roberta to discuss possibilities at 519-843-5140. MEMBER MILESTONESState Farm Insurance downtown Fergus is celebrating 10 years this month!
