The rain held off just enough to host our Annual Wrap Up BBQ on June 22, here at the chamber office. Co-host M&M Meat Shops served up some tasty treats. Over 40 business representatives and friends came out to help support the Centre Wellington Food Bank. Survey draw prize winners were Allan Teal of AL-DO-IT, Evelyn Gould of Jesters Fun Factory, and Aileen Hawkins of M&M Meat Shops.

MPP Arnott continues advocating for Groves even as Legislature shuts down
Once again, I want to report to you on my actions in support of the Groves Memorial Community Hospital redevelopment project.
On the afternoon of June 1st, the McGuinty Government shut down the Legislature unexpectedly. It is unlikely that the Provincial House will sit again before the October 6th election.
I used the final hours of the last day of the sitting to compose yet another letter to the Minister of Health, the Hon. Deb Matthews. I again urged her to respond to our community’s request to allow the project to proceed to the next stage of planning and the planning grant that goes with the approval. The text of my letter is posted on my website: tedarnottmpp.com.
I then approached her again in the House, to hand deliver the letter, discuss its contents with her, and one last time seek her support for the project.
We had a cordial and polite conversation. As in our past conversations, she did not definitively say no, but neither did she say yes. She has indicated to me in the past that their "10 Year Capital Plan" is still being finalized. This long awaited plan is supposed to be released in 2011, and we expect they will release it sometime before the election.
I believe that in the coming weeks, the McGuinty Liberals will undertake a pre-election spending spree, featuring photo-ops with cheques and the promises of more cheques.
That's why I have worked so hard, in support of everyone involved with Groves, to seek the approval we need to move forward. I have spoken to the Minister many times. I have spoken with senior staff in the Ministry of Health. I have written many letters to the Minister and the Premier. We have arranged meetings at Queen's Park. I have spoken about the project many times in the Legislature and in Committee, on the record. We have hosted the PC Health Critic, Christine Elliott and she toured the hospital. We have raised awareness through numerous public statements, and a Private Member's Resolution.
In my letter to the Minister, I summarized some of the actions I'd taken. In conclusion, I asked her to step up to the plate, and said we look forward to her announcement.
I remain hopeful, and want to thank our community and, especially, all involved with the Hospital for their support.
The Chamber was successful in obtaining a Canada Summer Jobs student. Michael Black joined us on June 6th and will be with us until August 26th. Michael worked for Information Services while he was in high school so he is familiar with who and what the Chamber does. He will be returning to the University of Ottawa in September to continue his Bachelor of Commerce with a specialization in Management Information Systems. Michael and Heather Andrews (Membership Coordinator) will be calling our members to find out what suggestions they have and what they feel is important for the Chamber to work on. So do welcome their call!
China trip is still a go! We currently have 18 people signed up with room for more. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the trip dates have been changed. This had to be done to secure a Toronto departure instead of leaving from JFK in New York. We will now depart from Toronto on Monday, October 10th and return on Wednesday, October 19th. If you are interested in joining us on this trip of a lifetime - you have until July 15th to get signed up!
While our regular monthly Networking Breakfast and Business After Hours take the summer off - the Member Services Committee and staff are busy planning the next season of speakers and hosts. Look for more info in the August BLINK and in the weekly eblast to members. Have a great summer everyone!
